guide to LA & newport beach, CA
Updated: Aug 15, 2018
California has a very special place in my heart. I love to travel and check out new places but at the end of the day, most places make me miss home. However when I travel to California, it feels like home and makes me curious to stay and play longer! I recently traveled to California with my Mom and checked out so many amazing spots to eat I wanted to share them all with you! Below is my list of must go spots that are healthy(ish) and delicious!
We flew into LA and spent the day there until it was time to drive (we rented a car) to Long Beach where our AirBnB was. I am linking our AirBnB here because it was so beautiful and the hosts were amazing! It was a bit of a drive to Newport Beach because of traffic but definitely worth it because it was not super expensive. We spent the next few days in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.
Honey Hi: This little spot was super cute and the food was so good. It is a little cafe with amazing bowls and dishes for breakfast and lunch. We had the breakfast bowl and the miso bowl which were both insane! We fueled up before heading to…
Griffith Observatory: This was such an amazing way to stretch our legs after the plane ride and the views were unbelievable. You can see the city from all the different trails and even get a really amazing view of the Hollywood sign. It is free and totally worth the trek!
Erewhon Market: Imagine Whole Foods x100. This spot is so much fun to check out and browse all the delicious health food options. They have awesome prepared food, coffees & drinks, and the groceries are some of the top food options! We grabbed breakfast and snacks here before our flight home.
Ballast Point: A stunning brewery located on the water with delicious food and even better sunset views. We had the spinach & artichoke dip, the burger and the BALT (bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato) sandwich. I highly recommend the spinach & artichoke dip because it was one of the best i’ve had! Be sure to get there in time to watch the sunset over the water!
Outpost Kitchen: This is a must!!!! Their breakfast and lunch is so amazing. We had the brekky sandwich and avocado on toast with a poached egg. The avocado on toast was so good the first thing I did when I got home was try to recreate it! The staff is super friendly and make a delicious meal.
Neat Coffee: When in Cali, you must drink a golden latte! This little spot was tucked away but was really such a gem! We stopped here for a morning pick-me-up drink before continuing with our day and I am so glad we did! They also have donuts and bliss balls if you need something quick!
Daydream Surf Shop: This little spot was very tucked away and was a bit hard to find but I loved it and recommend it! They have a chill coffee bar and a small shop featuring ceramics, books, home goods, surfboards, clothes, and some natural beauty products. I picked up the most beautiful ceramic mug there and love drinking my matcha out of it!
Sidecar Donuts: The line was out the door for a reason. These donuts are so delicious and the flavors are so unique. They are “the world’s freshest donuts” and live up to the name as you can watch them prepare the donuts behind the counter! I got so many messages when I posted from this spot and it’s easy to see why so many people love them.
Fashion Island: A beautiful outdoor shopping center that has great store options and stunning fountains and flowers. If you are looking to do some shopping, this is a fun place to explore. Some of my favorite spots were Saje Wellness, Brandy Melville, Lululemon, Athleta, Johnny Was, Pressed Juicery, and the koi pond.
Cafe Gratitude: This is one spot that you cannot miss! It is a super sweet spot that offers a plant based menu based on affirmations. Each dish has an affirmation attached to it that creates quite the experience when ordering and leaves you feeling uplifted. We had the mucho bowl which was filled with delicious flavors. One of my favorite parts of Cafe Gratitude is that they have kombucha on tap!
Newport Beach Pier: We went for a beautiful walk near the beach to look at all the houses and then made our way onto the pier. It is a beautiful spot and there are seal spottings at the very end of the pier often! This was a fun place to look around and spend some time near the ocean.
True Food Kitchen: WOW. This spot was so amazing. We had a delicious dinner here that was one of our top top top favorites. We had the grass-fed steak tacos and the organic tuscan kale salad with salmon. The flavors were unbeatable and they also had kombucha as an option! We sat outside near a beautiful fire pit and heat lamps.
Kit: I highly recommend coming here for breakfast! It is the cutest cafe with the most beautiful plants for purchase. If I lived closer I would leave with a new plant baby all the time! We had the breakfast burrito which was insanely delicious and I had their matcha latte which is also a must.
Upper Newport Bay Nature Reserve: This hike was so fun and refreshing. The landscape is beautiful and the flora and fauna are so fun to check out. We did both loops (the bay and the beach) and preferred the beach side but are both amazing. If you are looking to hike and walk around definitely check this spot out. Also, if you are a horse lover, you will see a few on your journey!
Lido Marina Village: This upscale shopping center is a great spot to walk around and admire as it is located right on the water. The shops are beautiful and offer a variety of products. We had fun checking out all the stores and the boats on the water. It was a bit out of our price range but still fun to admire!
Bear Flag Fish Co.: I saved the best for last because OMG this place was by far my favorite. The fish burrito was the greatest thing I have ever eaten and I am by no means exaggerating. It was HUGE and got to the point where I was continuing to eat because I didn’t want the flavors to end. I HIGHLY recommend this spot. My Mom had the swordfish and also loved it! We went to the location in Huntington Beach but there is also one in Newport. The Huntington Beach location is overlooking the ocean and was such a nice way to end the day watching the waves roll in and out. I dream about returning here soon!
These places hold a very special spot in my heart and I am so excited to share them with you! I hope you enjoy and are able to check some of them out.
