meditation: so you think you don't have time
Updated: Aug 15, 2018
If you think you don’t have 5 minutes to meditate each day, then you need to meditate for an hour.
This was the line that turned my whole meditation practice upside down. I mean… duh. The story of “I don’t have enough minutes in the day to meditate” is WHY we NEED to meditate. Let me explain…
Our conscious mind, or ego, is constantly creating stories that distract us from the present moment. It’s the annoying voice in your head that won’t shut up. Ever. It is that nagging thing in the back of your mind that pulls you into the past and sucks you into the future. It creates endless stories in the mind that aren’t even true. Take for example the internal dialogue that is always going on in my mind of the “to do list”. When my ego is hard at work, creating stories, it is constantly saying “you should start laundry, oh wait that shelf could really use a dusting, no I should just hang and watch a show on Netflix because I never get to do that, WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY? You really think you have time to watch a show??? You need to work on lesson plans….” and so on.
So back to this whole you need to meditate for an hour business. Yes, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but it is so freaking true. If one of the stories in your head, created by the annoying false ego, is that you don’t have time to sit down, close your eyes, breathe, and watch all of these thoughts, then you must meditate. I repeat you must meditate for your mental sanity! As soon as you take a few minutes to yourself, you will quickly see how often the ego controls your mind, and how flat out not true the stories are.
Every time I tell myself I have too much to do, I stop everything and meditate. Yes, some days it seems impossible to stop what i’m doing but it is necessary. Once the meditation period is over (sometimes just 2 minutes) it is so crystal clear to me that my “to do list” is not even realistic or necessary. It’s psychotic in a sense.
Meditation is grounding and makes you less crazy. End of story. Meditate even when you don’t think you have time.
