morning routine: my non-negotiables
Updated: Aug 23, 2018
I will admit I am a morning person, however I wasn’t always that way. Getting out of bed was a challenge up until a few years ago and maybe it is for you too. Now the morning is my favorite time of the day and I have very set routines that make is easier to get the day started. The way your morning begins can define the rest of your day. That’s why for me, having clear routines that feed my soul and get my day started is so important.
Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life. -Mark Twain
Now that I have those routines set in place, I consider them my non-negotiables. That means, I make time for these routines and can see noticable differences in my denemor and day if I don’t. The morning is a time for me to tune in, connect, practice self care, and set the tone for the rest of the day.
Below are my morning routine non-negotiables and why I make time and space for them in my day!
Taking a few moments to do stretching is something I can’t live without anymore. Overnight, your body creates “fuzz” between the muscles and creates tight, stiff muscles. Check out this YouTube video for more information here. I love to move my spine in all directions including: forward bending, back bending, twisting left, twisting right, side bending right, and side bending left. I also take time to stretch my hip flexors and hamstrings out since most of my day is spent driving, sitting, and standing.
After stretching, I love to choose a crystal for my day, use sage and palo santo to cleanse the crystal’s energy and my energy, and take 5-10 minutes to meditate and set my intention for the day. Lately, I have also been pulling a card from The Universe Has Your Back deck and/or a tarot card. This usually leads to journaling for another 5-10 minutes.
I received a saje wellness diffuser for christmas and now swear by diffusing. Aromatherapy is known to reduce aches and pains in the body, anxiety, stress, agitation, fatigue, and a number of other issues. Taking time to tune into my body and mental state to choose a scent to diffuse is one of my favorite routines. Not to mention, it makes your space smell amazing!
Last year, my intention for the year was to floss more! This form of self care is so important for our oral health and also gives you more confidence when smiling. It may seem silly, but incorporating flossing into my morning routine is one of my favorite parts in the morning. It is a form of self care for me to take those extra 2-3 minutes in order to show my teeth some love! As you may know, I have been actively working to use all natural, holistic products and finding floss that was just this was very challenging! I am in love with Cocofloss not just because they are a sustainable, woman run business, but because they choose their product’s materials with love and care. Not to mention, there are delicious flavors to choose from!
This is a relatively new practice for me. I have very poor circulation and have been trying to find natural ways to help my blood flow! Dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system by stimulating and invigorating the skin. Because it energizes your body, I love to do it in the morning before hopping in the shower. To dry brush, start at the feet and use upward strokes (towards your heart). I then move to the hands and use upward strokes (towards your heart). I spend about 3-5 minutes dry brushing my body. This self care practice stimulates, smooths, and exfoliates.
Take time to figure out routines that will get your morning off to the right start! Make time and enjoy them.
