setting intentions with mala beads
Updated: Aug 15, 2018
Using mala beads as a tool for setting intentions, meditation on your intentions, and manifesting your intentions is powerful. When I first started using mala beads, I was able to really dig deep and figure out what I wanted to bring into my life while having a consistent visual reminder of my desires. At first this may seem like a daunting task, however over time it will become easier and may even become something you look forward to doing in order to stay focused and grounded. For me, it has provided a time to pause, breathe, and realign with my deepest desires.
Below is how I set intentions and prepare my mala beads to support me through the journey. These steps have proven to be a beautiful ritual that allows me to focus my energy.
How to set an intention with your mala beads:
Journal: Allow yourself time to journal and let go of the words as they flow out of your writing utensil. What are your dreams? What are your deepest desires? What are your goals? WHAT DO YOU WANT? This is not the time to hold back, this is the time to unapologetically name and describe (in detail) what you want your life to look like, how you want to feel, and what you want to bring into your life.
Get specific: Once you allow the words to flow, give yourself time to read and reflect on what you have written. Are there any themes? Is there something that stands out? Once you decide what is calling you, take time to set the intention as if it is already achieved. Instead of saying “I want more money” say “Money flows to me consistently”. You already possess everything you need and desire, this is your time to bring it out and let it shine!
Cleanse & set your intention: Take time to lay your mala beads out in moon light, sun light, use sage or palo santos, or any other way to cleanse your beads of any stored energy. Once you have done this, sit quietly in a comfortable space and allow yourself to close your eyes while holding your mala beads in the left hand (your receiving hand) and focus on the words of your intention. Visualize what you want and get specific about what it looks like. Be in this moment for as long as you need. If there are any negative or dismissive thoughts about your intention, simply release them with your breath.
Release & trust: Take a final moment to release your intention to the universe. Do not be concerned about how your intention will manifest, but instead trust that the universe will lead you in the direction you need to go. Trust can be hard, but it is necessary.
Wear it & use it: I love to wear my mala beads often as a visual reminder of my intention. Every time I see or hold my malas, it is a chance to realign with my intention and take a deep breath. It is also nice to hold your mala while meditating in order to absorb all the benefits of the stones.
Check in: After some time has passed, check in on your intention. What is going well? Is there any part of the intention that is no longer serving you? Is it necessary to adjust your intention? Remember that there is no right or wrong answers here, only your deepest truth. Take time to go through these steps again if it feels necessary.
