what's the deal with // adaptogens?
The other day I was making my matcha in the kitchen and adding my go to adaptogens to the mix when my brother looked at me and said “what the heck are those things you are putting in your blender?”... and that’s when I realized I too had that moment when I watched top influencers putting adaptogens in their elixirs and drinks and wondered what they were. And so this series was born and of course it was only appropriate to start with adaptogens.
Through this “what’s the deal with” series I hope to shed some light on topics that I have seen or heard of and decided to dig deeper to learn about, and eventually incorporate into my food and routines.
To start, I want to emphasize our bio-individuality and what works for my body may not work for your body. This is a very important thing to remember as you start or continue your wellness journey. Equally important to remembering our unique make up is knowing that some adaptogens will work for you at one point in your life and then possibly stop working at another point. Your body is constantly changing and evolving so don’t be surprised if at any point you notice shifts happening, enjoy the ride!
So what exactly are adaptogens?
They are natural substances that help the body adapt and adjust to stressors. The beauty of adaptogens is that they help our body adapt in the exact way our body needs. They are plants and herbs that bring us back to a state of balance when faced with emotional and/or physical stress. They are pure magic, but should be consumed and taken the right way. It’s important to do your research and talk to your doctor before adding them into your diet especially if you have other medications or conditions happening.
Today, our lives are surrounded by and are submerged in stress that keeps our bodies and mind in an unbalanced state. I chose to incorporate adaptogens one at a time and did lots of research about the ones that would be good for ME to take. Using adaptogens has allowed my body to normalize my adrenal response to stressors. One of the many things that taking adaptogens has taught me is that there is no quick fix to minimizing stress. It takes time and consistency when starting adaptogen use in order to reap the benefits and to me, that’s a blessing. So often I find myself and others around me looking for instant gratification and through this process I have learned to be more and more patient and to be in tune with my body.
Currently I have a few adaptogens that I love and want to share with you! I get my adaptogens from Sun Potion because of their dedication to high quality transformational foods. On their website they also offer a breakdown of adaptogens by use (brain & mood, skin & beauty, body & strength, etc.) in order to aid in your decision for using specific adaptogens. Check them out here. I add adaptogens to my matcha primarily but have been known to also add them to my morning smoothie as well. When you start, take time to figure out a consistent and easy way for you to add them to your diet.
Adaptogens I am currently loving:
Ashwagandha: known as a super antioxidant, this herb is helpful in aiding hormonal balance, emotional balance, supports brain function, and boosts the immune system.
Reishi: known as the queen healer mushroom, this herb is known to promote calmness, centeredness, balance, inner awareness, and inner strength. This mushroom has way too many benefits to list and is my most recent favorite!
Cordyceps: known as an active adaptogen which boosts energy and reduces fatigue. It is also known to oxygenate the body and increase mental power.
I’ve started incorporating a few others but in my opinion, less is more! Enjoy the journey and give yourself permission to really tune in to how you feel internally and externally when ingesting adaptogens.
